Amazing Mexico

January 22nd, 2012

Mexico, or more properly, the United Mexican States, is the largest nation in Central America. It encompasses almost 2 million square kilometers. The land is rich and made up of diverse physical features. Mexico is bordered by the Pacific Ocean in the west, the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico on the east, Guatemala and Belize to the south and the United States to the north. It’s an incredible country with a long exciting history and even some scientific mystery. It’s also the home of some of the greatest pre-Columbian cultures anywhere on the planet.
Over 112 million people live in Mexico. They inhabit a land rich in physical diversity. Mexico is made up of the Mexican land mass plus Guadalupe Island and the Revillagigedo Islands in the Pacific Ocean. The Sierra Madre Occidental and Sierra Madre Oriental mountain ranges run across the country from north to south. The trans-Mexico Volcanic Belt or Sierra Nevada, runs across the country’s center from east to west. Mexico has one of the world’s most diverse weather systems. It has blazing hot deserts, snow, tropical hurricanes and wonderful Caribbean and Pacific beach weather.
Nature has blessed Mexico with incredible biodiversity. There are over 200,000 different species living in there. The Mexican ecosystem is considered the planet’s second most diverse. It is first in the diversity of reptiles with 707 species. It’s also in the top five worldwide in the number of mammal, amphibian and plant species living in one country. Mexico has set aside 170,000 acres for the protection of its incredible number of species. That land area is divided into national parks, reserve biospheres, natural monuments, sanctuaries and areas of natural resource protection. From these fertile lands Mexico has introduced the world to chocolate, avocado, maize, vanilla, tomatoes, zucchini, guava and a variety of beans and peppers. Their distinctive names reflect the Nahuatl language from which they came.
Man has lived in Mexico for nearly 23,000 years. They domesticated corn about 9,000 years ago and began to develop some of the planet’s most advanced civilizations. Their names ring out through the pages of history. Maya, Aztec, Toltec, Olmec, Zapotec, Teotihuacán, Totonac and many other peoples harnessed the power of the diverse resources in the area and gave rise to fantastic civilizations. Those cultures have left cultural artifacts which baffle scientist to this day.
A holiday in Mexico offers one many options. One can visit one of the many outstanding beaches on Mexico’s Pacific and Caribbean coasts. Places like Bucerias, Cancun, Acapulco, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Huatulco, Los Cabos and Mazatlan have all the sun, sand and surf you desire. Aside from their breakthroughs in medicine, mathematic and astronomy, the cultures of ancient Mexico have left several sites of cultural and historical significance in Mexico which deserve attention. The pyramid complex at Chichen-Itza, the Olmec colossal heads at Jalapa and the Toltec warrior columns at Tollan, Hidalgo are just a few.
